Spain At A Glance....Foreign Residents

Data from yesterday's El País showing the top ten countries of origin for foreign residents in Spain. Pass over each column to see both the country and the equivalent figure for 2007. The same source, based on date from the national statistics institute, puts the country's population at over 46 million.

Aaah! Error! Can not find XML file (chart.xml)

It must have been the heat Colin, blogging in Madrid wasn't easy yesterday. I just wanted to say that you didn't need to click on each bar to see the value. As for the XML error it's gone away - maybe they turned the servers off at Google to watch the footie?

That's interesting as I've seen much higher numbers for the Brits here (more like 700-800 thousand). Could that be because a lot of people just don't bother registering? Obviously the numbers would be particularly high in the summer but are these new numbers, possibly? Maybe lots of people are running away after the recent movements in the housing market?

I think these figures are based on empadronamiento, so anybody who doesn't register with their local ayuntamiento is not included. I would have thought that most Brits who actually live in Spain, rather than just possess a property, would be registered. Maybe the difference is explained by those who are not actually full time residents.

I'm really surprised by these stats. I always thought Africans were the largest group, followed closely by South Americans and then Brits. I never realized there were so many Romanians in Spain!
