One result of the agreement reached yesterday between the Spanish and British governments is that it should become possible for me to fly between Madrid and Gibraltar without having to go via London. The first flights are due to begin in December, and the airport will eventually be used by both countries. Not that I have any real interest in making the journey, but it is a sign of changing attitudes on the question. For virtually the first time a Spanish government seems to be acknowledging that making life difficult for the inhabitants of Gibraltar is perhaps not the best way of convincing them that their future lies with Spain.
